Ethics 101

Is it the right thing to do? Does it really matter if it is the right thing to do?Regardless of which television show you may watch or advertisement you may read, someone is always trying to tell you what to think and how to act. My grandmother used to remind me to get all the information you can and then, make up your own mind. Sound advice because we are solely responsible for our actions- and really cannot blame anyone or anything else.

Our beliefs shape the way we live- what we do, what we make, and the world we create through our choices.

“Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do.” – Potter Stewart

Being ethical is part of what defines us as a human being. We are rational, thinking, choosing creatures. We should make conscious decisions, although some may act out of habit or just stay in line with the views of the crowd. Although we don’t have a Jiminy Cricket on our shoulder, there are questions you might ask if you cannot decide how to act.Would you be happy seeing your decision as a headline in the news? It’s the “don’t be ashamed” test not the “don’t get caught” test.

Is there a universal rule that applies? We should never act to undermine the dignity and equality of all people.

Will my action bring about a good result? Is it the greatest good for the greatest number?

What would happen if everyone did this? Most agree that the right decision would be right for everyone in the same position.

What would my action do to my character or the character of my organization? Are you establishing a good habit (virtue) or a bad one (vice) by your choices?

Is the ultimate decision consistent with how I want to live my life? Do the actions reflect ethical beliefs? Just because you might get away with something, should you? What should you do? (ethics.org.au)

As compassionate, truthful, courageous, and intelligent people, living together in a community, we each have a responsibility to be the best citizens we can be. Soon, with the Ibis Cove annual meeting in March, two directors will be selected for the Board of Directors. This will be your responsibility-to elect TWO members, who will complete the Board and help guide and advise the Ibis Cove Master Property Owners Association. Sad to say but in the past, we have had some voters try to unfairly influence the outcome. By all means, it is important to support the candidates of your choice. Two people need to be selected this year and your ballot should have two of the names, which are placed in nomination. Only voting for one person, and suggesting to others that they, too, should only vote for that one person, while not illegal, is unethical. That rationale simply means that you are only interested in having your one candidate win, and that does not put forth the best interests of the entire community. If everyone did that, we would not have a complete, functioning Board. Don’t waste your valuable vote. Through a mailing, a Meet the Candidates Night, (3/7) and many other opportunities, you will have a chance to gather the necessary information to make an informed decision and select TWO people for the Board of Directors.
Ibis Cove is our community. How it proceeds should be vitally important to you and NO ONE should coerce, or unduly influence you and your vote.

It has been my greatest privilege and pleasure to serve as president of our Association and I continue to look forward to working with all of you as we make the RIGHT decisions for the future.

MANAGER’S REPORT – January 2019 Newsletter
To recap the major events of 2018:

  • Clubhouse Roof & Gutters Replaced
  • Concrete Sidewalk Repairs made throughout the community
  • Common Area Sidewalks pressure cleaned
  • Clubhouse Sidewalk Pavers reset
  • Pool Restrooms ADA conforming Toilets installed
  • Playground Mulch spread
  • Spa Chemical Controllers and feed line replaced
  • Geo Thermal pool heaters replaced
  • Tennis Nets replaced
  • Entry fountain was resurfaced and retiled, electrical repair work done, one circulation pump and one jet motor replaced
  • Entry Swing gate mechanism replaced
  • Call box keypad replaced
  • Exit swing gate drive belt & clutch repair; DC motor replaced
  • Irrigation pump #5 replaced
  • Lake Fountains #2 and #6 motors replaced
  • All palm trees and oaks in front yards have been trimmed at the expense of the association.
  • Exterior painting of 104 attached villas completed
  • Landscape corner Sivon & Logan refurbished
  • Eastern Perimeter fence line cleared and new plants installed
  • Spa 1 ½  hp submersible well pump replaced
  • Irrigation pump #7 discharge manifold replaced
  • Recharge well #2 submersible pump/motor/box replaced
  • Irrigation pump #6 replaced motor (w/7.5 VFD)
  • Common Areas mulched

Much of this was possible due to conscientious reserve budgeting, using monies accumulated over the estimated life of a significant replacement item. Moving forward into 2019, plans are to follow our Reserve replacement schedule for painting of homes in Phase 3, along with several replacements / refurbishments of Clubhouse and Amenities.

 We would like to remind everyone to report any landscaping or irrigation concerns to the office. Email us at ibiscovemanager@gmail.com  and/oribiscoveoffice@gmail.com  or call us at 239-348-7340 Mon-Fri 8-4. This way we can create a trackable work order. Flagging down any of the Leo Jr. crew is not helpful and there is a good chance your issue will be lost in the everyday shuffle. 

General Rules and Regulations:
No Member may communicate with any vendor, contractor or employee in any manner while the vendor, contractor, or employee is on Association property and/or the individual Owner’s property in the performance of their obligations to the Association.  Nothing herein shall prevent an Owner from contacting a vendor, employee or contractor if the communication is solely related to work contracted by the Owner and to be paid by the Owner as a separate service and/or charge.

In September & October letters were mailed to homeowners who were missing trees on their property, many as a result of Hurricane Irma. If you have not already, we ask that you inform us of your plan of action to remedy any missing/damaged trees by returning the Homeowner Response Form and Landscape Change Request Form. The deadline for tree replacement is April 30, 2019.

In light of two fatal traffic accidents, one at Immokalee & Collier Blvd. and one on Immokalee and US41, we want to remind residents of Ibis Cove to use caution when entering and especially when leaving the community onto Immokalee Rd.; and please remember this carries over within the communityThe speed limit is 20mph, meant to protect you and your loved ones!

We would also take this opportunity to welcome back our seasonal residents. With a full house, this is a very busy time of year for us all, so we would like to remind everyone of the following:

  • Trash collection is on Tuesdays & Fridays – garbage cans need to be put away by midnight (Tuesday includes yard waste & recycling)
  • Garage doors must be kept closed at all times unless being used for entering/exiting (this is also for security purposes)
  • Parking on the streets is not allowed after midnight
  • Commercial  vehicles are only allowed while service is being performed
  • Oversized vehicles must fit in garage with door closed
  • Landscape lighting must be in mulch beds so to not hinder mowing

Neighborhood News

As you have seen, our neighborhood is extremely popular!There is new construction everywhere, providing new opportunities and even more places to eat and shop!

LOGAN LANDINGS, at the corner of Logan Way and Immokalee Road will soon be home to a variety of new businesses. SPROUTS, with its healthier selection of natural and organic products, will open its doors on 2/20/19. Other establishments there will soon follow: Oak & Stone, Off the Bone BBQ, Brooks Gourmet Burgers and Dogs, Newk’s Eatery, as well as Pet Supermarket, ice cream shop, hair and nail salons and Cycle Guroo.

Keep in mind, we have many wonderful Farm Markets in the area, which provide fresh fruits and vegetables, local crafts and prepared foods:

Pine Ridge and Livingston- Sunday mornings
Vanderbilt Shoppes- Saturday mornings
3rd Street South – Saturday mornings

A highlight of Collier County is the 2019 43rd Annual COUNTY FAIR, at the County Fairgrounds on 3/14-3/24: rides, food, livestock shows, music, petting zoo, pony rides, pig races, demolition derby and MORE!

Please join us for our Ibis Cove Community picnic, “ALOHA,” on Saturday, March 23rd , 2-5 pm. Come mingle with your neighbors! Tickets will soon be on sale.

Get out and about and ENJOY!

Clubhouse Committee Meeting

 Clubhouse committee meeting held on January 16, 2019

Attendance:  Lori  Schena, Roseanne Liguori, Lorraine Balboni, Judith Morton, and Nancy Ferrari.

One of the big items that we are asking for this year will be for new toilets for the clubhouse.

There is a ripped screen on the lanai.  Children’s playground is in good condition.

No needs for the fitness center at this time.

The pool heater has been fixed in recent weeks allowing a warmer swim on the cool days.

The inside of clubhouse is looking very nice.

The library recently was done over as far as the books are concerned.  Al Strack donated many of Maggie’s books and they look terrific.

Next meeting will be in February.
